Sheikh Yakubu Musa Hassan Katsina

Biography

Sheikh Yakubu Musa Hassan Katsina (born 1 January 1950), widely known as Yakubu Musa Katsina, is a renowned Nigerian Islamic scholar, preacher, and educationist, distinguished for his lifelong dedication to the propagation of authentic Islamic teachings, educational development, and institutional leadership. He is notably one of the founding members of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN), where he has played a significant role in advancing the Council’s mission of promoting Shariah, unity, and the collective interests of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria. He is also among the founding leaders of one of the largest Islamic organizations in West Africa, Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Sheikh Yakubu Musa Hassan Katsina was born in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State and raised across Kano, Jos, Plateau, and Katsina States, experiences that shaped his intellectual and social development. He began his early Islamic education under the guidance of his father and, at the age of seven, moved to Kano under the care of his sister and her husband, where he pursued traditional Qur’anic education. During this period, he memorized the Holy Qur’an and studied a number of classical Islamic texts. Alongside his studies, he developed practical skills for self-reliance, learning pottery from his father, metal box making, and fishing, in which he became notably proficient among his peers.

He later returned briefly to Gwaram before proceeding to Jos to continue his education under his paternal uncle, Sheikh Ibrahim Mushaddadu, a prominent Tijjaniyya Muqaddam. During his stay in Jos, he encountered notable Islamic figures, including Sheikh Ibrahim Niass, an interaction that further enriched his exposure to Islamic scholarship. He subsequently enrolled in the Modern Islamiyya School established by Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) for the training of graduates of traditional Qur’anic schools. There, he distinguished himself academically and was promoted to the secondary section of the institution. He was also trained as a murshid (Islamic guide), a formative experience that significantly influenced his lifelong commitment to da’wah and Islamic propagation.

Over the years, Sheikh Yakubu Musa Hassan Katsina emerged as a leading figure in Islamic reform and scholarship in Nigeria, particularly under the influence of the teachings of Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, which emphasized adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah. Through his extensive preaching, teaching, and public engagements, he has contributed immensely to the spread of sound Islamic knowledge, moral discipline, and community development. His tafsir sessions and lectures, delivered widely across Nigeria and beyond, have had a profound impact on diverse audiences.

In addition to his leadership roles within SCSN and JIBWIS, he has founded and supported several Islamic educational institutions and community initiatives aimed at integrating sound religious education with contemporary learning and social development. His enduring legacy lies in his commitment to scholarship, institutional building, and the promotion of unity and reform within the Muslim Ummah.
