Biography

Sheikh Prof. Bashir Aliyu Umar, OON, is one of Nigeria’s most prominent Islamic scholars, jurists, and public intellectuals, widely respected for his deep scholarship, educational contributions, and commitment to the propagation of authentic Islamic knowledge. He currently serves as the President of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN), having assumed the leadership of the Council on 30 April 2025, following the demise of the former President, Sheikh Abdurrasheed Hadiyyatullah, who returned to his Lord on 28 April 2025. Under his leadership, the Council continues to advance its mission of promoting Islamic values, defending the constitutional rights of Nigerian Muslims, and providing principled guidance on issues affecting the Muslim Ummah and the nation at large.

Sheikh Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar was born in Kano, Northern Nigeria, into a family known for its dedication to Islamic learning and scholarship. From an early age, he was immersed in the study of the Qur’an and classical Islamic sciences, receiving traditional training in Arabic language, Qur’anic studies, Hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence. His early education laid a strong foundation for a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and scholarship.

In addition to his traditional Islamic education, Sheikh Bashir pursued formal academic studies in Islamic studies and related disciplines, eventually earning a doctoral degree in Hadith and Islamic Studies from the Islamic University of Madinah. This rare combination of classical Islamic scholarship and modern academic training enabled him to engage effectively with contemporary intellectual debates while remaining firmly grounded in the rich traditions of Islamic learning.

Over the years, Sheikh Bashir Aliyu Umar has emerged as one of the most influential Islamic scholars in Nigeria. He has devoted much of his life to teaching, preaching, writing, and mentoring students across the country and beyond. His lectures and sermons, delivered in both Arabic and Hausa, have reached wide audiences and have played an important role in promoting sound Islamic understanding, moral discipline, and community development.

Sheikh Bashir is widely known for his contributions to Islamic scholarship, particularly in the fields of Qur’anic interpretation, Hadith studies, and Islamic jurisprudence. Through his writings, public lectures, and scholarly engagements, he has consistently emphasized the importance of adherence to authentic Islamic teachings, intellectual rigor, and the pursuit of knowledge as a means of strengthening the Muslim community.

Beyond scholarship, Sheikh Bashir Aliyu Umar has also played an important role in public service and national development. He has been actively involved in religious guidance, community leadership, and national dialogue on issues affecting Muslims in Nigeria. His contributions to religious scholarship and community development earned him national recognition when he was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Before becoming President, he served for many years as Vice President of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, where he contributed significantly to the Council’s intellectual work, institutional development, and engagement with national policy issues relating to Islamic law, religious freedom, and social justice. His elevation to the presidency reflected the broad confidence of scholars, community leaders, and members of the Muslim Ummah in his scholarship, integrity, and leadership.

Throughout his career, Sheikh Dr. Bashir Aliyu Umar has remained committed to the advancement of Islamic knowledge, the mentorship of younger scholars, and the promotion of unity within the Muslim Ummah. His scholarship, humility, and dedication to service have earned him widespread respect among scholars, students, community leaders, and policymakers across Nigeria and beyond.
