He currently serves as the Secretary-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), the foremost umbrella body for Muslim organizations in Nigeria under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, where he plays a central role in coordinating programmes, shaping policy direction, and articulating the position of the Muslim Ummah on critical national issues.
He was born in September 1958 in the historic coal city of Jos, Plateau State. He began his early education with a strong foundation in Islamic learning, studying the Qur’an and classical Islamic sciences alongside his formal Western education. This dual intellectual formation shaped his later engagement as both a scholar of religion and a public intellectual.
Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar commenced his academic career at the University of Jos, where he contributed to teaching and scholarly development in the humanities and Islamic studies. Through dedication, research, and academic excellence, he rose through the ranks of academia and is currently a Professor of Islamic Studies at Kaduna State University. His academic career has been marked by commitment to teaching, research, and mentorship, with a focus on Islamic thought, ethics, and the role of religion in contemporary society.
In addition to his role in JNI, Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar is an influential figure within the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN), where he serves as a member of the Shura Council. In this capacity, he contributes to high-level deliberations, policy guidance, and strategic direction of the Council, reinforcing its mission of promoting Shariah, unity, and responsible leadership within the Muslim Ummah.
As Secretary-General of JNI, he functions as the chief administrative and policy driver of the organization, engaging actively on issues of national importance, including security, governance, interfaith relations, and social development. His public interventions consistently emphasize peace, justice, moderation, and the need for unity among Muslims, while also advocating for constructive engagement across religious and cultural divides in Nigeria.
Professor Khalid Aliyu Abubakar is widely respected for his ability to bridge scholarship and leadership, bringing intellectual depth and balanced perspectives to complex national and religious issues. Through his teaching, public engagements, and institutional roles, he continues to shape Islamic discourse and contribute to the promotion of social harmony and national development.
