Sheikh Professor Muhammad Alhaji Abubakar

Biography

Sheikh Professor Muhammad Alhaji Abubakar is a distinguished Nigerian Islamic scholar, preacher, and academic, widely respected for his deep scholarship, leadership in religious affairs, and long-standing service to the Muslim community in northeastern Nigeria. He serves as the Chief Imam of the Indimi Mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, one of the most prominent centres of Islamic worship, learning, and religious outreach in the region.

He was born in June 1973 in Maiduguri, where he was also raised within the rich intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Kanem-Borno Islamic tradition, historically renowned for its scholarship and commitment to Islamic learning. He began his early education in the traditional Qur’anic system, memorizing the Holy Qur’an and studying foundational Islamic sciences before advancing to higher studies in classical disciplines such as Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, and Arabic language.

In addition to his traditional scholarship, he pursued formal education to the highest level, attaining the rank of Professor. This dual intellectual grounding has enabled him to function effectively as both a university scholar and a religious authority, bridging the gap between academia and grassroots religious engagement.

As Chief Imam of the Indimi Mosque, he occupies a central position in the religious life of Maiduguri. The mosque serves as a major hub for worship, Islamic education, and community engagement, hosting regular sermons, scholarly lectures, and large Ramadan tafsir sessions that attract wide participation. In this role, he provides spiritual leadership, delivers Friday sermons, and mentors students and emerging scholars.

Sheikh Professor Muhammad Alhaji Abubakar is also a member of the Shura Council of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN), where he contributes to high-level consultations, policy guidance, and strategic direction of the Council. His involvement reflects his standing as a scholar of influence and his commitment to advancing the objectives of Shariah, unity, and responsible leadership within the Muslim Ummah.

Beyond his formal roles, he is widely known for his teaching and preaching activities, with his tafsir sessions and lectures reaching diverse audiences both within and outside Nigeria. His message consistently emphasizes adherence to the Qur’an and Sunnah, moral discipline, and the transformative power of knowledge in building a just and cohesive society.

Sheikh Professor Muhammad Alhaji Abubakar remains a respected and influential figure in contemporary Islamic scholarship in Nigeria, whose contributions to religious leadership, education, and community development continue to inspire and guide the Muslim Ummah.
