Imam Mukhtar Abdullahi, widely known by his traditional title Walin Gwandu, is a highly respected Nigerian Islamic scholar and religious leader who serves as the Chief Imam of Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State. He is a prominent figure within the historic Gwandu Emirate, an institution deeply rooted in the legacy of the Sokoto Caliphate and renowned for its enduring contributions to Islamic scholarship and governance in West Africa.
He was born in 1960 in Birnin Kebbi, where he was raised in a family with strong ties to Islamic learning and traditional leadership. From an early age, he was immersed in an environment that emphasized religious knowledge, discipline, and service to the community. He began his education in the traditional Qur’anic system, memorizing the Holy Qur’an and acquiring a solid foundation in the core sciences of Islam. He later advanced to the study of classical texts in Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and Arabic language under the guidance of renowned scholars within and beyond the Gwandu Emirate.
Over the years, he distinguished himself through scholarship, piety, and leadership, earning recognition within both scholarly and traditional institutions. His turbanning as Walin Gwandu reflects his esteemed standing within the emirate structure and his trusted role in matters of religion and community leadership.
As Chief Imam of Birnin Kebbi, Imam Mukhtar Abdullahi occupies a central position in the spiritual and social life of the Muslim community. He leads congregational prayers, delivers Friday sermons, and presides over major religious activities, including Ramadan tafsir sessions and Eid prayers. His sermons are widely regarded for their depth, clarity, and emphasis on moral rectitude, social justice, and communal harmony.
Beyond his mosque responsibilities, he plays an important advisory role to traditional authorities within the Gwandu Emirate, contributing to conflict resolution, religious guidance, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence. His influence extends across Kebbi State and neighbouring regions, where he is respected as a voice of moderation, wisdom, and continuity with the rich intellectual traditions of the Sokoto Caliphate.
Through decades of dedicated service, Imam Mukhtar Abdullahi (Walin Gwandu) has remained committed to the propagation of Islamic knowledge, the strengthening of community values, and the preservation of the scholarly heritage of the Gwandu Emirate. His life and work continue to inspire and uphold the ideals of faith, leadership, and service within the Muslim Ummah.
