About Us

SCSN was incorporated in 2005 for the protection, promotion and projection of the interest of Islam and Muslims throughout the country" and championing the unity, welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian Muslims.

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria serves the following functions:
  • Promote Islamic solidarity through fostering brotherhood and cooperation among Muslims in Nigeria and other parts of the World.
  • Coordinate the activities of muslim organisations and NGOs as a channel of contact with the Government and Foreign Muslim Groups on Islamic Affairs.
  • Seek to promote and uphold the right of muslim to shari'ah compliant laws, policies and programmes.

Our Practice Areas

The SCSN also intervenes to resolve political, domestic and social issues. Matters referred to the Council are deliberated by religious scholars, Imams, and legal professionals, all of whom are well versed in the four Sunni Schools of Islamic Jurisprudence.

1st President

Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmad (1936-2021)

Born in Dogarai Quarters in the walled City of Kano around October 1936, Ibrahim Datti attended Gidan Makama Primary School, Kano Middle School (Rumfa College), Barewa College, Zaria and the University of Ibadan where he studied medicine. He was orphaned at a young age and this framed his life, giving him the steadfastness and clarity of purpose that became his trademarks.

In 1991, he declared his intention to run for the Presidency under the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party, participating in the primary process until it was truncated by the then military government. He left partisan politics to focus on the promotion of good governance, propagation of Islam, promulgation of the Shari’ah and poverty alleviation. Until his death, he was President-General of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria. He was awarded the Officer of the Federal Republic OFR by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2001.

Sheikh AbdurRashid Hadiyatullah

Born on October 13th 1944 in the ancient City of Iwo Muslim populated town of the then Western Region now in Osun State, started his elementary school at Anwaru Islam School in Ilorin for Arabic & Western Education from 1952 to 1958, proceeded to Mahad Arabic Islamic Institute of Nigeria Ibadan under the tutelage of Sheikh Murtadah Abdulsalam (May Allah forgive and have mercy on him and all our dead muslims Aamin) from 1960 – 1963 attended Diploma Programme in Arabic at University of Ibadan, then proceeded to Islamic University of Madinah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia where he obtained B.A (Hons.) in Shariah Law B.A (Hons) in Theology and Islamic Missionary combined honour with Second Class Upper and as an external student and Diploma in Islamic Dawah respectively from 1966 – 1972.

Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar

Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar was born in Kano in July 1961. He started his University education in Ahmadu Bello University in Electrical Engineering before going to the Islamic University, Madina where he did his B.A., M.A and Ph.D. in Islamic Studies with specialization in the Sciences of Hadith. He studied Maliki Fiqh and Usûl under traditional Ulamâ in both Madina and Nigeria.

He started lecturing in the Department of Islamic Studies of Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria, in 2006, and has served as a Permanent Commissioner in the Kano State Shariah Commission from 2007 to 2010. He was a consultant on Islamic Finance to the Financial System Strategy (FSS 2020) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and later took up appointment as the Special Adviser to the CBN Governor on Non-Interest Banking from 2010-2014...

Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, mni

He is a 1978 law graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He started his banking career as a legal officer with United Bank for Africa Plc in 1980 from where he proceeded to Nigeria Merchant Bank in 1982. He was an Assistant General Manager/Company Secretary & Legal Adviser with First Interstate Merchant Bank Limited and subsequently, became a Director/Legal Adviser & Board Secretary at Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

He was also, a Director representing CBN/NDIC on several banks that were taken over by both the Central Bank of Nigeria/NDIC for turn-around. He has attended several professional courses abroad including those of Queen Mary College, University of London, in International Commercial Law, Institute of Management Development (IMD), Switzerland, as well as Senior Executive Development Program in Kuala Lumpur; Malaysia...
